Shipwreck

Shipwreck | Smugglers Cove | Zante, ZakynthosThe Smugglers Cove Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Greece and of course, Zante island’s best sight! Until the first years of 80’s it was just a magnificent quiet, sandy beach, but since 1982 it has evolved to one of the major tourist attractions of Greece and a must see place for every Zante island visitor.
The ship which lies on this beautiful beach is called “Panagiotis”. In 1982, “Panagiotis” was smuggling a large quantity of cigarettes when it was observed by a customs patrol. It managed to outrun the patrol boat but was eventually cornered on the North West coast of Zante in dreadful storm conditions. Its captain determined that the customs should not gain his prize, realized all was lost and decided to scuttle the ship. “Panagiotis” was carried onto the rocks in the fierce storm and finally, it was washed ashore. Since that day, the Shipwreck Beaches fame grew increasingly and today, thousands of tourists from all around the world visit the Smugglers Cove to admire this unusual spectacle.
